Ena izmed mojih glavnih dolžnosti kot praktikantka TKM je zagotavljanje prehranskih nasvetov. Pogosto pacienti niso zadovoljni, ko jim svetujem naj jedo več riža, ali vsaj nekoliko več kruha in testenin, še zlasti ne tisti, ki si želijo izgubiti težo. Večino časa jim poskušam razložiti, da po TKM teoriji riž zagotavlja Qi energijo in da je splošno znano, da žita zagotavljajo osnovno energijo, ki ohranja človeka pri življenju že tisočletja, tako na vzhodu kot na zahodu. Sedaj imam na voljo tudi veliko pomembnih informacij, ki me podpirajo.
Sistematične analize in meta-analize svetovnih poročil kažejo, da je prehrana z nizko vsebnostjo ogljikovih hidratov povezana z znatno večjim tveganjem umrljivosti na dolgi rok. Prav tako poročila kažejo, da prehrana z nizko vsebnostjo ogljikovih hidratov nujno ne ščiti ali škoduje glede na umrljivost in pogostost kardiovaskularnih bolezni. [1]
To je zelo razumljivo v teoriji TKM. Dobri in preprosti ogljikovi hidrati kot so npr. riž, pšenica, proso in ječmen zagotavljajo hiter in enostaven vir energije, ki podpira našo osnovno presnovo. Medtem, ko ketonska dieta, ki vključuje velike količine maščob in malo ogljikovih hidratov, v telesu povzroči ketozo (stanje, ko telo porablja maščobe za energijo, saj za porabo nima dovolj ogljikovih hidratov). Pozabimo na moderno fiziologijo Krebsovega ciklusa in to, da je presnova maščob zelo komplicirana in povzroča več metabolitov. Ideja, da telo silimo k porabi maščob, je prošnja, da telo porablja zaloge. Najbolj pomembna zaloga energije v našem telesu je bistvo ledvic. Ta vir življenjske energije prihaja v omejeni količini. Staranje se prične, ko se ledveno bistvo izgublja. In seveda, umremo, ko nam zmanjka vitalne, življenjske energije.
Nihče ne bi smel uporabljati ketonske diete - samo v primeru, da je izguba telesne teže bolj pomembna kot zdravje, pravi vodilni kardiolog. S tem mnenjem se popolnoma strinjam.
Vedno sem stroga s tistimi, ki pridejo k meni z željo po izgubi telesne teže. Če je njihov cilj priti k meni zaradi regulacije nedelujočega sistema, obnovitev manjkajočih energij in čiščenje toksinov, potem čestitke, našli ste pravo pot. Vendar najti pravo pot ne pomeni samo, da ste jo našli, ampak da jo je potrebno tudi prehoditi.
Kakšne nasvete pa ima TKM glede izgube telesne teže? Žal mi je, vendar učinkovit načrt, ki bi bil univerzalen za vse, ne obstaja. Kar vam lahko povem je to, da se vsak realen načrt prične z rednimi obroki in počitki, in kar je najpomembnejše, z ogromno discipline in modrosti.

Low carbs diet? Beware of the risks!
One of my main duty as a TCM practitioner is to provide dietary advice. Very often, patients are not pleased when I ask them to eat rice, or at least some bread and pasta, especially for those who want to lose weight. Most of time I try to explain to them with TCM theory like how rice provide the Qi energy and with common sense like how grains provide the simple energy that keep human alive for thousands of year both east and west. Now I have a more important piece of information to back me up.
A systematic review and meta-analyses of worldwide reports suggested that low-carbohydrate diets were associated with a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality in the long run. They also suggested that low-carbohydrate diets might not be protective or harmful in terms of CVD mortality and incidence. [1]
It is very understandable in the TCM theory. The good and simple carbohydrates like rice, wheat, proso millet and barley provide a fast and easy source of energy that support our basic metabolism. While for the Ketogenic diet, with large amounts of fat and very few carbs, is turning the body into ketosis (a state where it is burning fat for energy when it doesn't have enough carbohydrates to burn). Let’s forget about the modern physiology of Krebs cycle and how fat metabolism is indeed way more complicated and create more metabolites, the idea of forcing our body to burn fat is indeed asking our body to use up our storage. Our body’s most important storage of energy is the Kidney essence. This life origin energy comes with limited amount. Aging is when our Kidney essence runs low. And of course, we die when the vital energy runs out.
No one should be doing a ketogenic diet - unless weight loss is more important than their health, according to a leading cardiologist. I completely agree with this opinion.
I am always harsh on those who come to me for weight losing. If their goal for coming to me is for regulating the malfunctioning system, restoring the missing energies and cleaning out toxins, then congratulations, you have found the right path. But finding the right direction do not actually means that you have arrived, you still have to walk the walk.
So how about the TCM tips for weight losing? I am sorry to tell you that there is not a one-size-fit-all and super effective plan. All I can tell you is that every realistic plan starts with regular meals and rest, and most importantly, tremendous amount of discipline and wisdom.
